About Us

Our History and Purpose

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receiveā€¦.
-St. Francis of Assisi

The Office for Service and Social Action was established in 2010 to meet the community needs of the most vulnerable. We acknowledge that although many of us do not daily experience social justice issues such as hunger, homelessness, poverty, or illiteracy, these issues continue to affect the lives of a great many in our global community. Through service, God calls us to work for the common good in the world in which we live.

We serve the University of Saint Francis community, and the community in which we live by:

  • Providing students, faculty and staff with service opportunities that meet identified community needs
  • Establishing and nurturing reciprocal partnerships with community agencies and organizations
  • Consulting with and providing training for faculty regarding service learning and developing service learning courses
  • Tracking and collecting data regarding service offered to the community through service and service learning
  • Assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of the service we offer to others
  • Investigating strategies to identify and establish meaningful change and social justice for those whom we serve
  • Serving as a conduit for grant information pertinent to faculty development in service learning and community service projects
  • Serving as a resource for grant information for students who wish to develop community service projects
