For Students

Getting Started

The Office for Service and Social Action offers many great ways for students to get involved and serve in the community, locally, nationally and globally. Annually, USF students provide over 25,000 hours of service  to the community through community service and service-learning.
There are so many wonderful options for service, choosing one can be overwhelming!
Here are some questions to consider when you make a commitment to serve:

  • Is this service for a course? If yes, does my professor have specific requirements?
  • What issues/causes interest me? Homelessness, Education, Hunger, etc.
  • With whom would I like to work? Elders/Seniors, Children, persons with developmental disabilities, etc.
  • Do any of the service sites work in areas related to my intended career?
  • What days and times am I available to serve? Remember to include the travel time required to get to and from a service site.

Thoughtful selection of a service site will help to make your service experience meaningful for both yourself and the agency where you will serve.

Here is a video which will walk you through the process of signing up for a service opportunity or you can follow the instructions below.

Take the OSSA Online Pre-Service Orientation and Quiz

All new enrollees are required to take the OSSA Online Pre-Service Orientation and pass the Pre-Service Orientation Quiz (score 80% or better) prior to being released to register for service activities. This orientation is designed to help students learn about why USF is committed to service and service-learning, why it's important for you to engage in service, what you need to know about your role and responsibilities as a service participant, and how to find out how our office can support you.

Once you have passed the quiz, you will not ever need to take the quiz or view the orientation slides again and can register for service opportunities on our website. Proceed to Search for Activities to find an activity during an opening in your schedule or Browse Community Partners if you know the name of the organization where you would like to serve.
